A deeply personal and distinctly Texan story takes center stage this month as Thank You for Listening makes its world premiere at the Dallas International Film Festival 2026 on April 25. The 27-minute short documentary will screen at the historic Texas Theatre as part of a special double feature alongside a documentary on Charley Crockett.

Produced in collaboration with Texas Monthly and the NonFiction Hotlist, the film centers on Dallas-based country artist Joshua Ray Walker as he navigates a life-altering cancer diagnosis while continuing to create music and prepare for a return to the Grand Ole Opry. The film also features renowned Austin photographer Dan Winters, whose presence adds both visual depth and emotional weight.

Co-directed and produced by Gene Gallerano and Bob Ray, the project is a fully homegrown effort, with its entire creative team rooted in Texas. Gallerano—an Emmy, Peabody, and Grammy-winning filmmaker—and Ray, known for his gritty, music-driven storytelling, bring a shared sensibility that balances intimacy with raw authenticity.

The origin of the film is as serendipitous as it is fitting. Gallerano first met Walker on a flight to Europe, where a chance conversation revealed an artist whose life and music were inseparable. As Gallerano recalls, Walker didn’t just write songs—he lived inside them. That connection sparked a collaboration that would take on deeper meaning when Walker began chemotherapy shortly thereafter.

Production adapted to meet the moment. To protect Walker during treatment, the filmmakers constructed a set inside Gallerano’s mother’s attic in Texas, transforming it into a sanctuary for storytelling. That space became more than a backdrop—it evolved into the emotional architecture of the film, shaping its tone and visual language. Suspended between memory and reality, the setting reflects both confinement and creativity, echoing the themes at the heart of Walker’s journey.

Thank You for Listening is not a film about illness as spectacle. Instead, it’s an exploration of presence, vulnerability, and the quiet resilience found in creative expression. Drawing tonal inspiration from Beasts of the Southern Wild with a touch of Dolly Parton flair, the documentary weaves together music, memory, and mortality into something deeply انسانی and affecting.

At its core, the film is about showing up—for art, for each other, and for the fragile, fleeting moments that define a life. It’s a testament to the power of storytelling as both refuge and connection.
