Before it screens at the Dallas International Film Festival, we spoke with director and screenwriter Alysa Nahmias about her documentary Cookie Queens, a coming-of-age film that looks at Girl Scout cookie season as something far more complex than a childhood tradition. Through the lens of four young Girl Scouts, the film explores how sales goals, peer dynamics, and community expectations can turn a familiar annual ritual into a surprisingly high-pressure experience.
In our conversation, Alysa shared how she was drawn to this world as a way to explore girlhood, ambition, and early lessons in confidence and resilience. Cookie Queens ultimately reveals how even the most nostalgic, seemingly simple childhood systems can mirror larger societal structures—offering a thoughtful, often surprising look at how young girls learn to navigate competition, communication, and identity in real time.
