What if kids’ entertainment could be fun, engaging and something parents could trust?
That’s the idea behind Captain Flashlight Jr., a new animated series being created by Steve Gaconnier of Janimation and Rod Butler of Filament City Media.
With decades of experience in children’s programming between them, Gaconnier and Butler are bringing their creative backgrounds and shared passion for positive, family friendly content to a new generation.
The series follows Captain Flashlight Jr. and his friends through adventures where they learn about kindness, courage, love and the Golden Rule, while also learning from their mistakes along the way.

Joining the conversation with AdChat DFW’s Patty Harrison was Ellie Brighton, one of the show’s animated characters. Ellie is hard of hearing and wears hearing aids, giving the series an opportunity to incorporate representation and sign language into its expanding world.
Harrison shared, “I’ve never interviewed an animated character before, it was a fun first. And when I played the video for my 7-year-old grandaughter she asked when she could watch it! I think that’s a sign it will be well-recieved by children.”
“Creating something like Captain Flashlight Jr. gives us an opportunity to bring characters that maybe model a more positive influence for kids,” Gaconnier added.
The team is currently crowdfunding to produce the pilot, with approximately $42,000 raised toward a $50,000 goal. Additional funding will come through corporate sponsorships and brand partnerships that align with the series.
The creators are also looking to the advertising, marketing and PR communities for introductions to potential sponsors and partners.
For parents, the goal is simple: create the kind of programming kids enjoy and parents feel good about them watching.
As Butler put it, “It’s content that we parents can trust.”
