Moroch ECD Authors Two Books

This is an excerpt from AdChat DFW’s interview with Kevin Sutton, Executive Creative Director, Moroch Partners talking about writing Baseball Town: The Fall and Rise of the Texas Ranges and Dear Midol: Essays from Estrogen Hell.

AdChat DFW: What prompted you to write a book about The Texas Rangers? baseball town

Kevin: I write a daily blog, rangersrounding3rd.com and during the season I write every day. As last season progressed, they went from last to first which was really amazing to me. So I thought I could go back to my daily blogs and get the best of them and connect the dots and tell a good story. And that’s what I did. I wrote an intro, then waited till the season ended…which was a punch in the gut, then wrote a recap. But I needed a little more punch.

AdChat DFW: And that punch was?

Kevin: Illustration. I contacted a world class illustrator buddy, Rob Day, from my Indianapolis days. When I’d left in the 90s, he had given me a book of cartoons he was working on. I thought those might be perfect here. He agreed to let me use them and he drew some new ones.

AdChat DFW: Where did the book’s title come from?

Kevin: Josh Hamilton left the Rangers after the 2012 season. He made fun of Dallas Ft.-Worth not being a baseball town, because Friday night attendance would drop. He said fans were going to a high school football game rather than a baseball game. People were up in arms over him saying that but it actually was true. For the cover illustration, Rob took that story and illustrated a baseball player swinging at a football.  I knew he’d nail it and he did. I have 16 chapters and Rob’s illustrations accompany each.

AdChat DFW: How does writing a book about baseball tie in with AdChat DFW’s mission statement?

Kevin: When hiring creatives, I always look what other aspirations they have besides advertising, whether it’s designing t-shirts, wanting to be a director or whatever. To me if you aspire to be something more, that’s a good thing. I love advertising, but if a creative has loftier goals, then that is a huge plus for the agency because ultimately they will bring much more to the table.

AdChat DFW: Why did you write your first book that was published in 2014, “Dear Midol: Essays from Estrogen Hell”?

Kevin: I write yearly Christmas letters, which friends always encouraged me to publish one day, but it needed something more. So I added some other stories about being the father of five daughters and it became a complete book. Anyone who has raised daughters will be able to relate.

AdChat DFW: How often do you write and why?

Kevin: I write something every night after the Rangers game, and doing these daily post and blogs, honestly keeps the presses running in my head. I believe if you do what you love every day that’s the most important thing.
