Chuck E. Cheese is an American family entertainment center and pizza restaurant chain founded in 1977 and is headquartered in Irving, Texas. The chain’s name is taken from its main character and mascot, Chuck E. Cheese, who is beloved by small children around the globe. Each location features arcade games, amusement rides, and character stage shows in addition to serving pizza and other food items; former mainstays included ball pits, crawl tubes, and animatronic shows.
The pandemic put significant financial strain on the company, and CEC Entertainment filed a voluntary bankruptcy petition under Chapter 11 in June 2020. Amazingly, the business challenge created many opportunities for the brand to assess, adjust and pivot to create a new business model that was ready for post-pandemic prosperity. How did they do it?
