Imagine trying to make plans for your family, build a future and pursue the American Dream….while knowing that, when called, your first obligation is to serve your country.
Now add business ownership to the mission.
At Thunderlywe talk about military veterans in franchising a lot. In fact, it’s the August topic of our “American Dreamers: The Stories of Franchising”® campaign.
But never in my own personal career have I talked about active duty military members becoming multi-unit franchisees.
Until now…
Serving His Country. Building Their Future.
Thanks to our newly-launched “We’ve Got Your Back” podcast, produced exclusively for The Joint Chiropractic, let me point you in this awe-inspiring direction. Because Naval officer Yosef Perfido and his wife Sarah Perfido are living that reality. And after listening to Yosef share his journey with Jack Monsonon the show, boy, is it inspiring.
Oh, sure. Husbands and wives go into business together all the time.
But who has obligations to Uncle Sam in the same picture? Who doubles down and takes on multi-unit franchise ownership?
Yep. This couple is pretty special.
After opening their first location for The Joint in Groton, Conn., the Perfidos celebrated the grand opening of their second location in Warwick, R.I., this July. The entire franchise network celebrated along with them as The Joint officially entered its 44th state.
“As both a business owner and military officer, I’ve always appreciated the value of proven systems, disciplined execution, and serving people in meaningful ways,” Yosef said to the media to commemorate the occasion. “Opening Rhode Island’s first clinic for The Joint Chiropractic and representing the brand’s entry into its 44th state is an incredible honor. It’s also a testament to my wife’s strength as a military spouse that I get to plan my transition toward retirement from service as she shines in the most deserving way in leading our businesses. The Joint’s mission to improve quality of life through routine chiropractic care is very special to us, and we’re excited to expand access to a trusted, affordable healthcare solution for residents throughout Rhode Island.”
It’s triumphant stories like these that keep me feeling patriotic about the 250th birthday of our great nation. Sprinkle in the fact that 90% of The Joint Chiropractic’s franchise network is comprised of multi-unit owners as it nears 1,000 locations, and one begins to see the true power of scaling a great brand.
Yosef and Sarah have made health and wellness a priority in their lives. So much so, that they’ve been active members with The Joint Chiropractic for years. That was a lightbulb moment. Because the business they enjoyed as customers, they now enjoy as owners too.
Include the fact that Yosef and Sarah, like so many fellow franchisees, are not chiropractors but job creators for DOs in their markets, and the future of accessible and affordable access to health and wellness begins to take on a whole new meaning.
From Military Mission to Business Mission.
Yosef credits his wife for being the CEO of the business. They are making their dreams happen today, not when he retires from military service.
But it’s that same service that has served both of them well in tackling this bigger objective. And it’s amazing to see the rewards it is already delivering.
“I think military members probably make the best entrepreneurs — especially for franchises — specifically because they know how to follow a check sheet,” Yosef says. “They know how to follow procedures and orders. They know how to ask for help. And they meet timelines and wickets like no other person. It’s a rare breed.”
It takes one to know one, Yosef.
“If I was to tell all of my sailors one thing…my biggest fear is not failure,” he admits. “It’s regret. I don’t want to regret any decision that I’ve made and I don’t want to regret not doing something that I thought I could do.”
Damn the torpedoes. Full steam ahead.
