The Oceans: Life & Livelihoods
“World Oceans Day” was established by Canada’s International Centre for Ocean Development at the Rio de Janeiro Earth Summit in 1992. Since then, June 8th has been recognized as a day of support for our planet’s oceans and the wildlife that inhabit them. The UN’s 17th Sustainable Development Goal, “Life Below Water”, serves as a framework for protecting of marine life biodiversity, combatting ocean acidification, and mitigating ocean pollution. To date, the United Nations have recorded 31 publications and 2029 events – the most of any SDG.
The global campaign accrued over 60M in social media reach, 350K video views, and over 45 internationally recognized speakers in 2020. This year’s theme is “The Oceans: Life & Livelihood”
